We've chosen these neighborhoods based on their proximity to popular tourist destinations and public transit, as well as their charm, history, and culture.
Union Square
Union Square is a hub for all things shopping and dining in San Francisco. Whether you're looking to pick up a new wardrobe, find the perfect pair of shoes, or just want to grab a drink and watch some people on your way back from dinner, Union Square has you covered. Located in the heart of downtown San Francisco, Union Square offers many more attractions than just shopping and dining. In addition to being an epicenter for nightlife options (including bars, clubs, and theaters), it's also home to several attractive landmarks like St. Peter's Church which dates back over 170 years.
The area has become so popular that it even has its nickname: "Mecca," named after Mecca Goodyear, who opened her very first store there in 1849!
Fisherman's Wharf
If you want to be near the water and enjoy plenty of shopping, restaurants, and tourist attractions, Fisherman's Wharf is a great place to stay. This area is just south of Pier 39 and can be accessed through several subway stations. It also has great walking paths that connect with other neighborhoods like North Beach and Chinatown. The main attraction in this neighborhood are shops along Jefferson Street, where you'll find souvenirs from all over the world and trendy clothing stores (including many options for local brands). There are many restaurants here, including seafood joints with views of the bay or even Alcatraz Island!
SoMa Area
The SoMa neighborhood is one of the most popular spots in San Francisco, mainly due to its close proximity to major attractions like AT&T Park, Union Square and Fisherman's Wharf.
The SoMa area is home to many of the city's best restaurants and hotels. The neighborhood has many great options for eating out as well as staying at some of the top hotels in San Francisco.
Financial District
The Financial District is the oldest neighborhood in San Francisco and home to many of the city's attractions, including Fisherman's Wharf, Lombard Street and Union Square. The area has plenty of hotels, but you might not want to stay at one because there are so many great restaurants and bars here.
Nob Hill and Russian Hill
Nob Hill is a neighborhood in San Francisco, California, roughly bordered by Sacramento Street, Taylor Street, Leavenworth Street and Powell Street.
There are many restaurants to choose from in Nob Hill. One of them is The Stinking Rose restaurant. It's known for its garlic dishes like garlic ice cream and roasted garlic soup served in a crock pot with sourdough bread for dipping into the soup for $15! If you're not into that kind of thing but still want something interesting and different to eat then go for the spaghetti with slow-cooked meatballs for $20 or their famous "garlic burger" which is basically just a normal hamburger except it has so much garlic on it that I could barely breathe once I took my first bite (and drank most of my margarita). Other options include Italian food at Il Fornaio (which literally means “the bakery”), Mexican food at El Buen Sabor Taqueria y Cantina or Japanese sushi at Kintaro Ramen & Izakaya Restaurant.
The Mission
The Mission District is a great place to stay for families. It's also a great place to stay for food, nightlife and culture, but this neighborhood is especially kid-friendly. Located just two miles from downtown San Francisco, the Mission is one of the city's most diverse neighborhoods and home to some of its most delicious Mexican cuisine.
The Mission has a lot of great restaurants within walking distance of your hotel: El Tonayense Carnitas Taco Truck on Folsom Street serves up some amazing tacos; the Il Cane Rosso pizzeria has been serving up gourmet pies since 1995; and across town at Del Norte Brewing Company you can enjoy their own brews along with those from other local breweries such as 21st Amendment Brewery or Anchor Steam Brewing Company (which was founded in 1896).
Here are great neighborhoods to stay in San Francisco.
The best neighborhoods to stay in are Union Square, Fisherman's Wharf and SoMa Area. These neighborhoods have lots of restaurants to choose from and are close to tourist attractions like the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island. You can also see the beautiful views of San Francisco with a cable car ride or walk up Lombard Street (the "crookedest street").
Fisherman's Wharf has delicious seafood restaurants and brick-oven pizzerias such as Fisherman's Grotto (famous for their "world famous" seafood platter). There are also many bars along Pier 39 where you can grab a drink before heading back to your hotel room at night. The view here is amazing! If you want something more upscale with great views, then SoMa Area would be perfect for you! This area has many high-end shops like Louis Vuitton where they sell handbags that cost thousands of dollars but don’t worry—you don’t have much money because this trip is all about having fun!
San Francisco is a wonderful place to visit, and it’s even better when you stay in an amazing neighborhood. There are many great neighborhoods in San Francisco, but these are some of our favorites. Whether you want great food, culture, or nightlife, these neighborhoods will have everything you need and more!
