108 rooms Begin your explorations in Annecy’s picturesque medieval old town. Dubbed the ‘Venice of the Alps’, pastel-painted old Annecy is a network of narrow canals lined with Piedmontese-style houses. Heritage aficionados will adore the 12th century Palais de l’Ile, perched on its own rocky islet, and the well-curated museum at the imposing Château d’Annecy. Pop into centuries-old churches, snap a photo or two from the Pont des Amours, and picnic in the leafy Jardins de l’Europe with the kids. Boutiques, cafes and eateries border the canals and the Thiou River, perfect for savouring hearty Savoyard fare in the sunshine.
Lake Annecy itself is dazzling. Sail, swim, fish, paddleboard and kayak in clear waters, or charter a speedboat for a family day out. Adventurers of all ages will love wakeboarding, water skiing and diving, too. Back on shore, you’ll find sand and pebble beaches, as well as grassy expanses with volleyball courts, striped deck chairs and ice cream or aperitif spots. Ramblers, runners and cyclists can zip along the 43-kilometre path which encircles the lake.
Further afield, mountainous Haute-Savoie is a thrill-seeker’s paradise. Winter visitors can ski and snowboard on high-altitude slopes, whilst summertime travellers are invited to climb, hike and paraglide in striking natural surroundings.
Base yourself in Annecy’s old town for charming architecture and easy access to an array of restaurants and bars. Do expect the area to be busy during the summer holidays and over Christmas. There are some lovely hotels in the newer part of the city, too.
The banks of Lake Annecy are lined with pretty villages, some of which boast great hotels, acclaimed restaurants and historic monuments.
