One of the most-visited cities in the world, London has dazzled travellers from across the globe for centuries. Marvel at the National Gallery’s extensive collection, catch the legendary changing of the guard outside Buckingham Palace, shop ’til you drop at Harrods or feast on innovative British fare at a trendy city eatery. A fascinating fusion of old and new, the city is bursting with things to see and do. Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway, an action-packed family weekend, or a food-and-music-focused holiday with friends, London really does have it all. It’s well worth planning in advance, though. Take a look at exhibition dates and book theatre tickets before you travel if you can!
There are beautiful landmarks around every corner in London. Admire Buckingham Palace, delve into royal history at the Tower of London and Westminster Abbey, or glimpse some of the treasures on display at the imposing British Museum. We’re big fans of the V&A Museum, the Tate Modern and the National Portrait Gallery, too. Little ones will love the Science Museum and the Natural History Museum, whilst art aficionados will adore smaller gems such as Sir John Soane’s Museum, the Wallace Collection and Leighton House.
Guided walking tours of Bloomsbury offer an insight into the city’s literary history, whilst strolls through Soho reveal London’s edgier side. Browse the elegant boutiques of Chelsea and Marylebone, join residents for a wander or cycle through enormous Hyde Park, or dress up for an evening at the theatre in the West End.
Foodies will adore the fragrant stalls of Borough Market, the hip eateries of Hackney and Shoreditch, and the Michelin-starred restaurants of upmarket Mayfair. Afternoon tea at Fortnum and Mason’s is a real treat, and little beats a cold beer on the banks of the Thames or Regent’s Canal on a long summer evening.
Magical at Christmas, gorgeous in the summer sunshine, and wonderfully cosy in the autumn, London really is a year-round destination. Whether you’re looking to ride the London Eye on your first visit, or to delve into the craft cocktail and off-beat creative scene on a return trip, London promises a warm welcome every time.
London is vast, and we’d suggest staying in the centre of the city. The neighbourhoods in zones 1 and 2 are particularly well-connected by public transport, making travelling from place to place by bus or tube swift and simple.
Elegant Kensington boasts some of London’s best museums, including the V&A, the Science Museum and the Natural History Museum. All are wonderful for families with young children. There are lovely independent shops, cafés and galleries, too.
Home to Harrods and Harvey Nichols, Knightsbridge has long been synonymous with luxury shopping. You’ll find old-school charm aplenty in nearby Chelsea, with fashionable boutiques and quirky gourmet pubs lining the King’s Road. The Saatchi Gallery is a must-see.
For timeless luxury, base yourself in Mayfair. Stretching along Park Lane from Hyde Park Corner to Bond Street and beyond, this part of London is studded with classic hotels and museums; notably the impressive Royal Academy.
The West End, which includes trendy Soho and Covent Garden, is ideal for theatre-goers and party types.
Across the Thames, the South Bank has galleries, theatres and a great weekend market. More modern, it’s a great choice for a lively, forward-thinking atmosphere.
London’s hotel scene has long been dominated by big-hitters, many of which have been open for over a century. Known for their imposing heritage façades, lavish interiors and exceptional attention to detail, these iconic hotels are generally clustered around Hyde Park and Kensington. They remain amongst the best places to stay in London.
In recent years, however, a collection of hip boutique hotels have opened, often in converted townhouses. These spots, owned independently or by smaller hotel groups, showcase eclectic British design at its best, fusing classic and contemporary elements. Many boast excellent cocktail bars and fine dining restaurants; some have soothing spas and well-equipped gyms.
With no shortage of special boutique boltholes in the city, we’d suggest thinking carefully about location when choosing your hotel. London’s neighbourhoods are wonderfully walkable, and you’ll discover far more on foot than when zipping around by tube or taxi.
